3½ stars out of 4

After killing off the survivors from Part 3, Freddy finds himself some more teenage flesh to sink his talons into. What follows is a movie that is severely lacking in solid plot development; but MAN are the special effects here awesome. Practically every kill segment is an outstanding FX display in itself. Particularly memorable is this scene where a hapless victim is forcibly transformed into a cockroach. You just have to see it. It needs to be pointed out that at this point in the series, Freddy had undergone a remarkable transformation- from the grim and terrifying dream demon of the original movie to the campy, wisecracking killer of today who quips as he guts his victims. As a result, Freddy doesn't seem to be terrifying anymore- instead, he's just entertaining. At the time Part 4 came out, Freddy mania was probably at its peak since the movie did something like 50 million at the box office; the highest gross yet for a Nightmare flick.
