Freddy Krueger, one of horror's most popular personalities is introduced
proper in this first installment of the wildly popular Nightmare movies.
A remorseless child killer, Freddy is released by the courts of Springfield
due to a minor technicality - only to be burned alive by outraged parents
who want to ensure that rightful justice prevails. But Freddy returns
as a demon who stalks the dreams of Springfield's teenage population
and kills them in their sleep. As a result, all the kids are afraid to
go to sleep; and half of them probably wished they had insomnia. One
teenage girl in particular; Nancy (HEATHER LANGENKAMP) knows what Freddy
is and is determined to kill him after seeing her friends and lover
butchered at the hands of the maniac. Only thing is, she has to somehow
lure him out of the realm of dreams; and into the 'real' world in order
to finish him off for good. However, the fact that this first movie went
on to spawn 5 sequels should tell you that Nancy's efforts were hugely
unsuccessful. Though made on a miniscule budget, the first movie boasts
a strong plot, and retains a creepy feel throughout thanks to the masterful
direction of horror veteran Wes Craven. Despite the fact that so many
sequels were subsequently made; none have managed to remain as fresh or
eerie as this original masterpiece.
