Proudly billed as 'The Ultimate Experience In Grueling Horror', this cult
horror-classic certainly lives up to the hype it has built around itself in
the years since its release. Gore enthusiasts will find PLENTY to revel in
delight here; while those who are not quite accustomed to shockingly graphic
scenes of blood and dismemberment might just find themselves regurgitating
last night's dinners. Plot revolves around a group of teenagers; led by Ash
(BRUCE CAMPBELL) and friends who spend the night in a cabin in the remote
woods and are assaulted by terrifying forces of the undead once the sun goes
down. The movie remains a terrific example of how you can make a really
effective horror movie by using simple claustrophobic settings and frenzied,
almost deranged camerawork. All this despite having a drastically low budget
that clearly shows in certain scenes. Though not for everyone, THE EVIL DEAD
is compulsory viewing for any self-respecting horror fanatic. Who would ever
have guessed though; that the makers of this movie, Sam Raimi and Robert
Tapert would someday go on to produce such mainstream TV fare as Hercules
and Xena: Warrior Princess?
