SPUN's most indelible visual is that of Mickey Rourke (9 1/2 WEEKS) standing in
front of a wall-size American flag in a porn store. As the national anthem
plays, he crudely lectures us on his sexual preferences. This is one of many
drug-induced hallucinations in SPUN, certainly one of the most annoying films of
the year. Another has Ross (Jason Schwartzman), the story's lead character,
seeing himself as a Jesus-like figure being nailed to the cross. When you are
doing non-stop heavy drugs, as they do in SPUN, your brain can imagine anything.
And while we are covering some of the more obnoxious moments in SPUN, let us
not forget the view from the inside of a toilet bowl of Mena Suvari (AMERICAN
BEAUTY) defecating.
In a movie in which druggies appear to be competing for the title of the most
loathsome character, it's hard to pick a winner. With teeth that appear to have
been eating dirt, Suvari's Cookie is pretty disgusting. As Frisbee, Patrick
Fugit (ALMOST FAMOUS) has so many king-size zits that he looks like he has
smallpox. Spider Mike (John Leguizamo) is an over-tattooed drug dealer who
bounces around the room like unrestrained popcorn. Even the cops snort speed
before they engage in drug busts. Only Brittany Murphy (8 MILE), since she
plays her usual tart character, is disqualified for the most loathsome title.
You probably won't be surprised to learn of the sole claim to fame of Jonas
kerlund, the film's director. He once did a music video for Madonna. She
deserves him.
SPUN runs 1:41. It is not rated but would be NC-17 for pervasive drug content,
strong sexuality including bondage, nudity, language and violence and would be
acceptable for college students and older.
