This is a decent visual movie but an awesome sonic one. The film is just an excuse to unleash some really great glam rock tunes.
The plot is silly...Hedwig is a quasi transexual that is frustrated and jealous over another girlie boy, Johnny Gnosis, that stole Hedwig's material. While Gnosis plays arenas, Hedwig plays Denny's style eateries. His band energetically belts out tunes while people eat sandwiches and peruse teh salar bar.
Each song narrarates the Hedwig story... he was born a manin East Berlin, an American GI marries him, persuades him to get a sex-change operation, and then brings him to this country, his romance and breakup with Johnny Gnosis and their inevitable rock and roll showdown.
The plot is ridiculous with many holes. This is not supposed to be "The Godfather"! This money is most compareable to Rocky Horror Picture Show.
What is great about the movie is the music and the visual depiction of the spirit and excitement of rock music. The soundtrack has 14 songs and 8 of them are gems. 4 of those songs are awesome tunes. These songs would be radio friendly even if they did not come from a movie. It is the music that drives this film.
Conservatives and people that have no affinity for glam rock should not watch this movie. There would be nothing in it for them.
However, if you are an "artsy fartsy" movie goer taht is into David Bowie, Loe Reed, New York Dolls, etc then you have found teh ROcky Horror Picture show for the new millineum.
The movie has strong gay overtones but you do not have to be gay to enjoy the film (i am not). It is rated R for homosexual kissing and naked buttocks.
