1 Star out of 4

Surfboarding fans won't exactly get the same thrills out of Surf Riders as they do the real sport. With few moves and difficult controls, the game is a tough sell even to its target audience.

A general audience will be lost at sea, because the manual does not define terms for non-surfers. I still don't know what pearling is. I wish the manual and game had more background information on the sport.

The surfer animation looks positively 16-bit. The graphics as a whole are slightly better, with colorful but hardly realistic wave and sky effects. Overall, Surf Riders doesn't pack enough punch to make it worth your time.
