With its colorful Miami setting, Kevin Bray's ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS wants to
be a violent "Miami Vice" with all-black leads. It gets the setting right but
little else in this action comedy about a bounty hunter named Bucum Jackson. As
the bounty hunter, Ice Cube gives a likeable performance in a terminally lame
movie.
The story has Bucum trying to collar Reggie Wright (Mike Epps), who "goes to
jail more than Robert Downey, Jr." Reggie, a perpetual screw-up, loses his
girlfriend's winning sixty million dollar lottery ticket. This produces a
subplot in which Reggie tries to recover the ticket. Along the way, the script
gives the actors dialog that serves only to mark time. "You know what I'm
sayin'? You know what I'm sayin'?" is typical of Reggie's paragraph
punctuations.
Just so that you won't miss the story's only decent joke, I need to point out
that Bocum is pronounced "Book 'em." Now that you have savored the movie's one
laugh there is no longer any need to waste your money on a ticket.
ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMINS runs 1:30. It is rated R for "strong violence,
pervasive language and brief sexuality" and would be acceptable for older
teenagers.
