NHL FaceOff 2001 delivers exactly what you would expect - a decent hockey game with fluent
controls.
Indeed, the animation of the team players, hockey sticks, and puck is impressive. The puck
spins, bounces, and flies around with convincing physics. However, passing is a nightmare.
The game offers little more than last year. Key features include the ability of switch teams in the
middle of a game, a secret staff team consisting of the game's programmers, and injury reports.
The new Line Manager feature allows players to choose from more than 12 different offensive
and defensive strategies while utilizing the roster to create strategic lines.
The new Shot Aim option lets you control the direction of your shot during the back swing as
you prepare to launch a rocket past the goalie.
In the end, though, there's no need to pay the big bucks for the upgrade unless you are a die-hard
hockey fan. With PlayStation 2 just around the corner, it might be a good idea to see if any next-
gen hockey games appear before the year is out.
